Chete

Overview

Chete Safari Area is situated on the shores of Lake Kariba between Senkwe and Sengwa rivers in the Binga District of Matabeleland North. The place was named after Chete Island which is a Zambian island opposite the camp and the name was derived from the word “Chetu” which means cutting across sharply or suddenly. In this case, the Mighty Zambezi cuts across Chete Gorge.

The Safari Area which covers a total area of 1 581km 2 (land 1081km 2 , lake 500km 2 ) is a controlled hunting area with great fishing spots and boasts the reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most rugged concessions. Because of the hilly terrain, the road network is not well developed meaning some areas are only accessible on foot. The vegetation is dominated by Miombo and mopane woodlands with sparse grasslands which allows steady population growth of elephants, buffaloes, eland and other plains game. Chete Safari Area falls under the Sebungwe administrative region and is part of the Kavango-Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA).
