Chirisa Safari Area is located in the centre of the Midlands Province and exclusively used for sport trophy hunting. The Safari area is an important link in the routes of elephant migration from the Zambezi Valley through to the central plateau and Hwange National Park on the Western border of Zimbabwe. Its vegetation is dominated by Brachystegia woodland, Combretum thickets, diverse alluvial terrace communities and mopane woodland.
Overview
Chirisa provides a habitat for lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo (collectively known as the big four) and a large variety of raptors and vulture species. Other species include baboon, jackal, duiker, guinea fowl, francolin, dove and sandgrouse.
The main scenic features are the escarpments bounding the Upper Karoo plateau overlooking the major river flood plains of Sengwa and Sasami rivers.
Access
By Road
From the Hre/Byo A5 (about 2km from Kwekwe) turnoff towards Gokwe and travel for 140km. When you get into Gokwe at the robot controlled intersection turn right, and proceed for the next 80km. After Defe Filling Station at the Chirisa Safari Area turn left and proceed on the dust road for the next 32km till you arrive at the Parks office.
by air
There is a light airstrip at Sengwa, but prior arrangements must be made with Zimbabwe Parks and Management Authority before landing
